    A mission-driven nonprofit organization is seeking an experienced Senior Accountant / Assistant Controller to join its Finance team.     Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, this role oversees one accounting team member and serves as a key contributor to financial reporting, month-end close, audit preparation, budgeting support, and process improvement initiatives.

    Responsibilities

    Accounting & Financial Reporting

    • Maintain the general ledger in accordance with GAAP.
    • Prepare journal entries, account reconciliations, and monthly financial reports.
    • Support month-end and year-end close processes.
    • Reconcile bank accounts, investments, and balance sheet accounts.
    • Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis.
    • Prepare supporting schedules for audits and financial reporting.

    Cash Management

    • Monitor cash balances and banking activity.
    • Process electronic payments and transfers.
    • Assist with cash flow monitoring and treasury functions.
    • Maintain accurate records of cash-related transactions.

    Accounts Payable & Accounts Receivable

    • Review and process vendor payments.
    • Maintain accounts receivable records and monitor collections.
    • Ensure proper coding and documentation of financial transactions.
    • Prepare invoices and billing documentation as needed.

    Process Improvement

    • Identify opportunities to automate and streamline accounting processes.
    • Improve workflows, reporting procedures, and internal controls.
    • Support finance system enhancements and modernization initiatives.
    • Document accounting policies and procedures.

    Leadership

    • Provide guidance and support to accounting staff.
    • Assist with workflow management and departmental priorities.
    • Collaborate with stakeholders across the organization to support financial operations.

    Qualifications

    Required

    • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
    • Minimum 5 years of progressive accounting experience.
    • Strong understanding of GAAP and financial reporting.
    • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
    • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
    • Strong written and verbal communication abilities.

    Preferred

    • Nonprofit accounting experience.
    • Experience with Financial Edge.
    • Supervisory experience.
    • Process improvement or systems implementation experience.
    • CPA designation or CPA-track candidate.
