One Mountain, One Tam: BayWood Artists Celebrate Twenty Years

The Marin Art & Garden Center welcomes the BayWood Artists to celebrate their 20thanniversary with a benefit show and sale entitled “One Mountain, One Tam: Baywood Artists Celebrate Twenty Years.

BayWood Artists are a group of professional landscape painters who are dedicated to preserving the land for future generations to enjoy. Each year the BayWood Artists partner with an environmental organization in the Bay Area to produce a fine art show and donate fifty percent of the sales proceeds to that organization.

BayWood artists, a non-profit plein air group, was founded in 1997 when Mary Welch, then Founder and Director of the landscape show Marinscapes, suggested to Zee Mott, Lissa Nicolaus and Sherrill Miller that they form a plein air painting group. The group’s goal would be to benefit the environment and bring attention to endangered lands through their artwork.

Since then, countless volunteer hours have gone into producing these annual art shows and bringing attention and support to a diverse group of conservation organizations, such as Marin Agricultural Land Trust, Marin Open Space, Point Reyes National Seashore Association, and Tamalpais Conservation Club. Having worked towards saving open space land in the Bay Area for so long, the artists might find themselves hiking up Mt. Diablo to find the perfect view, canoeing down the Russian River, or setting up their easels under the Golden Gate Bridge, waiting for the sunset.

This is the second year that the BayWood Artists has joined with One Tam to produce a benefit art show. One Tam is the Tamalpais Lands Collaborative community engagement initiative, which supports mountain-wide youth and community programs, restoration activities and citizen science opportunities. One Tam’s efforts bring increased stewardship of the biological, open space, and recreational resources of Mount Tamalpais.

Bill Long, Chair of the Marin Open Space Trust, said, “BayWood Artists’ dazzling paintings bring beautiful open spaces into our homes. They remind us on even the darkest days of our spectacular surroundings and the need to preserve them for future generations.” Doug McConnell, television host and BayWood supporter, has spotlighted the BayWood Artists on both Bay Area Backroads and Open Road.

“One Mountain, One Tam” will feature about 100 original fine art paintings of Mt. Tamalpais depicting the glory of this Bay Area icon. The show will be open to the public Friday, October 6th through Sunday, October 8th in the newly renovated historic gallery, The Studio, at the Marin Art and Garden Center.
